Keeping a Private Online Diary

Mar 28, 2009 Lizz Shepherd

LiveJournal allows anyone to keep a free online journal and to choose the level of privacy for that journal.

Many people seek a place online to keep an online diary that won't be available to everyone, or that will have a limited number of people who have access to read it. Online journals can be kept for free with LiveJournal.

Free Online Diary

Online diaries are easy to keep with the LiveJournal set up. Signing up takes just a few minutes and the online journal can then be customized. When setting up the online journal, users can decide whether they want their online diary to be completely private, accessible to a specific list of friends or whether the online diary can be read by anyone who finds it on the Web.

A LiveJournal online diary can also be customized so that certain posts are public while the rest are private and vice versa. Some users choose the option so that each post can have its own security level to be determined when it's written. Other users prefer the simplicity of setting a specific security level that will affect all posts.

Posting to Online Journals

An online journal works in much the same way as a blog. The owner can post to it every day, several times a day or simply on the occasions when the mood strikes them. Some LiveJournal online diaries are random thoughts that a user wants to express in a diary format. Some are geared toward a specific topic that may or may not be personal to the writer.

LiveJournal Layouts

To make their free online diary more personal in style, users choose their own LiveJournal layouts that reflects their personality and the overall feel of the journal. There are hundreds of LiveJournal layouts available on the site, but many members want to find more unique layouts that won't be used by as many other members or that are more elaborate than the ones available.

Many third-party sites have cropped up to offer LiveJournal layouts that can't be found on the official site. Some of these are offered for sale by third parties while other are offered from sites that allow readers to upload their own unique layouts for anyone to download. Users can also create their own unique LiveJournal layout by upgrading their LiveJournal account from the standard free account to a paid account.

Online journals can be a welcome creative expression for people who are looking for a fun, private creative outlet. Having the ability to share it with a group of friends makes LiveJournal online diaries a fun way to share that expression without worrying about who might be reading.
