Many websites like eHow.com and DemandStudios.com do not hire non-American writers for paid work. Instead, check out these sites that pay non-US citizens to write.

The world of online publishing is growing by leaps and bounds, but many non-American writers find that they're simply out of luck because many of the more popular paid writing websites do not hire non-American writers, usually due to tax purposes, along with the requirements and regulations involved with paying writers living in many different countries.

With many websites unable to pay writers outside the United States and Canada, this leaves non-U.S. writers at a distinct disadvantage if they're trying to earn money writing on the web.

Some popular writing websites that do not hire non-American writers include eHow.com and DemandStudios.com. But fortunately, there are some wonderful websites that do hire non-U.S. citizens who are looking to earn money writing on the web.

Suite101.com

Suite101.com was founded in 1996. Since then, this website has grown and evolved into a web publishing front-runner, with more than 10 million people visiting the site each month.

Suite101 hires (and pays) freelance writers to write 500-word articles on more than 500 topics. U.S. citizens and non-U.S. citizens alike must apply to become a Suite101 writer by submitting writing samples and information concerning experience that relates to the topics that the writer wishes to write about.

Once accepted as a Suite101 writer, applicants must sign a contract agreeing to provide a minimum of 10 articles every 90 days. The new Suite101 writer then becomes a Contributing Writer, who is provided with one-on-one interaction with editors who specialize in SEO and the other aspects of web writing. Contributing Writers on Suite101 also have the opportunity to apply for vacant Feature Writer positions for one of the hundreds of topics on the site.

How do Suite101 writers earn money? They receive a portion of ad revenue from the site. A non-American writer can earn even more by writing more than 50 articles or becoming a Feature Writer. Some Suite101 writers earn thousands of dollars each month, making Suite101 a viable place for non-American citizens to earn some serious money on the web.

Bukisa.com

Bukisa.com is very similar to eHow's Writer's Compensation Program (WCP), which does not hire non-U.S. citizens. So non-American writers who were interested in writing for eHow (before they realized that non-U.S. citizens are not eligible for eHow's WCP) may enjoy writing for Bukisa.

On Bukisa, writers sign up to provide content in the form of how-to articles. Bukisa writers are then paid for every 1,000 page views. The rate paid per 1,000 page views varies according to the Bukisa Index, a dollar figure that, according to Bukisa, is "updated at least once per month based upon the overall performance of our websites revenue streams - this involves the following: contextual advertising, banner advertising, e-mail marketing, joint ventures and more."

Bukisa writers can also benefit from recruiting friends and family members to write for the site; a Bukisa writer who actively recruits writers will enjoy increased revenues.

About.com

About.com is always seeking guides to host guide sites on a particular topic of expertise. One of the most well-regarded websites of its type, About.com seeks experts to host its guide sites.

The site is very selective and once an applicant passes the first round of screening, the guide candidate must complete a rigorous prep program during which they create a sample guide site. Only then is a candidate eligible for consideration as a guide.

But once accepted, monthly compensation begins at $675 per month for the first year and writers who increase page views by creating interesting and useful content for About.com can enjoy earnings that far surpass the $675 level. In fact, the About.com site boasts that some of its guides earn in excess of $100,000 per year.

The web is full of paid online writing opportunities for Americans and non-U.S. citizens alike - the trick is knowing where to look.
