Web Journalism and the Stay-at-Home Mother

How Online Employment Creates Home-Based Opportunities

Nov 17, 2008 Tara Gardner

An obstacle one faces after having children is the decision to return to the workforce, and mothers seem to bear the brunt. However, online employment is a viable option

Technology is changing the face of employment in this country and throughout the world. Opportunities once deemed impossible, like working from home, are now a reality for many people, and no group appreciates these possibilities more than the stay-at-home mom. Once saddled with the crucial and difficult decision to return to the workforce and contribute financially to the family or remain home with her children, web-based journalism and article writing has created a nice niche for such women.

A Growing Population

According to The US Census Bureau’s 2006 survey, the most recent available, The United States has an estimated 5.6 million “stay-at-home” mothers . This impressive number is only getting bigger, and the potential to tap into the creative resources of this population offers online employers an effective and convenient way to spread their businesses’ message.

Whether it be through direct production of online marketing and advertising dialogue, or through the secondhand steps of proofing and editing, companies can keep the product fresh while keeping the cost down. There is no overhead: office space, supplies, computer access, etc., and the work is still being done effectively. Not to mention the benefits to the mothers, who can still feel like they are productive member of the workplace and also contributing to the family, yet can be home to nurture and care for their children, forgoing the tremendous expenses of sitters and daycare.

According to Denise O’Berry in her article entitled “Need Help in Your Business? Get a Mom,” “Businesses can hire these professionals at a fraction of the cost of hiring traditional employees or contractors for temporary or permanent assignments. This creates a win-win relationship where a company gets a high-level professional at a reduced cost and the professional is able to keep a flexible schedule working from home”. The benefits far outweigh the possible problems, and the potential is enormous.

The Future of Online Employment

Interestingly enough, this trend shows no sign of slowing down, and the more globalization, outsourcing and international employment opportunities arise, the more chances for the stay-at-home mother to find a reasonable and reliable online employer.

In his article “Simply the Best Online Jobs,” by W.P. Allen, the author states that “The only real best online jobs are the ones that deal with the internet itself. And that has to do with information. That's why people are online. To find information. Affiliate marketing, Google AdWords, Google AdSense, ClickBank, and other companies like that are the ones that offer real jobs online that you can actually make a living from”.

He also warns that there are many scams, and this is true. One should always be careful of get-rich-quick or too-good-to-be-true employment opportunities or anyone asking for money prior to being able to gain employment. If it sounds too good it probably is. But that shouldn’t dissuade mothers from browsing the internet and thoroughly checking all of the companies and their offers. The sky’s the limit and the web-based journalism and internet employment realm is certainly the wave of the future.
